What is it?

Countdown originates from the French quiz show Des Chiffres et des Lettres. And was brought to channel 4 as Countdown in the 80s. Countdown is hosted by Richard Whitely, with Carol Vorderman. There are also two people who sit in the Dictionary Corner (a lexicographer and a celebrity guest) who use the New Oxford English Dictionary to solve the letters games, whereas the two contestants, use only their brains to make the longest word possible out of the selection of nine letters, and reach the given target using the numbers chosen.

Ooo...tell me more!
Each show consists of 4 letters games, then a numbers games, then 4 more letters games, then another numbers game, and then three letters games, a numbers game and the conundrum. The conundrum is basically a nine letter anagram, and the first contestant to buzz in with the correct answer, gains the points. For each game, the contestants, the dictionary corner dwellers, and Carol (if it is the numbers game) have thirty seconds to solve either the letter or numbers games, or the conundrum.

Example

Round 1 = letters

Selection chosen = AHLTOEPEN

Solutions after 30 seconds: Contestant  1 = ETHANOL

                                          Contestant 2 = PHENOLATE

The lexicographer will look up the words given by the contestant if they are unsure as to whether they are in the dictionary. If a word is in the dictionary, points are given, if it is not, then points are not given, simple really! But only the contestant with the longest word will get the points. The lexicographer and celebrity guest then share their solutions if they made any longer words.

And with the numbers games:

Round 5 = numbers

Selection chosen = 100, 5, 4, 10, 7, 3

Target = 379

After thirty seconds the contestants say how near to the target they got, and the contestant who got the nearest tells Carol their solution. Carol then checks that it is correct, and if neither contestant reached the target, Carol will explain how it is done.

And, that is the basic idea of Countdown.

The link below will teleport you to the world of the official channel 4 Countdown site, and although it doesn't mention Susie at all, its probably easier to understand, than what I have just told you!

If you still don't understand then watch the show!! Also, the Countdown book called "Spreading The Word" is very useful to find out more about the history and behind the scenes goings on, of Countdown. There are also a few pictures of Susie, and a small section about her too, but you will have to buy the book to read what it says!
